A fast-moving brush fire called the Bryson Fire has exploded to 200 acres in the hills of Malibu. Driven by aggressive Santa Ana winds, the blaze has knocked out power, disrupted cell service, and forced mandatory evacuations across the area.
Fire Behavior and Weather Conditions
The fire initially sparked on Thursday afternoon near Mulholland Highway and was reported at just 2 acres. It quickly underwent a rapid rate of spread, active spotting, and jumped past 45 acres before swelling to its current size.
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning through Friday evening for Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains. The region is enduring exceptionally dangerous fire conditions, including:
- High winds: Strong Santa Ana wind gusts.
- Extreme heat: Triple-digit and high-90s temperatures.
- Bone-dry air: Critically low humidity levels.
Evacuations and Infrastructure Impact
- Evacuations: Mandatory evacuation orders and voluntary warnings are active for multiple neighborhoods in Malibu.
- Power and Communications: Southern California Edison initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs to minimize additional fire risks, which combined with fire damage has knocked out electricity and cell phone reception for numerous residents.
Firefighting Efforts
Los Angeles County Fire Department crews worked tirelessly through the night to halt the fire's progression. Before nightfall on Thursday, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters executed aggressive water drops by scooping water directly from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Ground crews continue to battle severe terrain and unpredictable winds to build containment lines.
Residents in surrounding areas are heavily urged by city officials to keep emergency supplies ready, vehicles fully fueled, and phones charged. The cause of the Bryson Fire remains under official investigation.
